There's been speculation that Google might release its own browser, incorporating Firefox technology, much as America Online's browser utilizes Microsoft's Internet Explorer.
Google's hired Ben Goodger, whose role at Mozilla.org was to plan, organize and execute development of the rapidly growing alternative browser. "As of January 10, 2005, my source of income changed from The Mozilla Foundation to Google Inc. of Mountain View, California," he wrote on his personal Weblog.
According to analysts at WebSideStory, Firefox was used by 4 percent of Web surfers in December, an increase from 3 percent in November.
Goodger won't be without friends at his new job. Several other Mozilla programmers were hired by the company during the summer. Google also sponsored a meeting for Mozilla staffers.
What does his hiring mean? Goodger declined to say what he will do at Google. "For all questions regarding Google, I ask that you contact Google directly, rather than myself," he wrote.
John Battelle, who's writing a book about the search industry, wrote at JohnBattelleSearchblog.com that talk about a Google browser is natural. "But I think the thing after the browser, whatever it may be, is far more interesting to speculate upon," he wrote, without offering any further thoughts along these lines.
Goodger said he isn't abandoning his Mozilla co-workers. "I remain devoted full-time to the advancement of Firefox. While I will be spending more time at Google, I will work out of the Mozilla Foundation offices regularly as the need arises," he wrote
