According to the statement issued by a security firm in the US, the first cell phone virus in the world is spreading through the US and has been traced to the Philippines.

The virus named Cabir has hit 1.5 billion mobile telephones in about 12 countries and kicks off a new era of cell phone viruses.

F-Secure Virus Research Company Chief Mikko Hypponen said the most significant effect of "Cabir" is that it consumes cell phone battery power.

Hypponen says the virus was first seen in an electronics shop in Santa Monica, California, but that "Cabir" spreads quickly like computer viruses and be transmitted on the ground with Bluetooth wireless technology.

F-Secure officials investigating the spread of mobile telephone viruses to 12 countries including the UK and China warn that cell phone viruses will become more common in the near future and will affect other communication instruments as well.
