Targets are used in a framest page that tell the browser where it should be loaded

target="_top" within a link tag causes the new page to load in the full body of the window, which is useful if you ever want to break out of the frameset you have created and have a frameless page.

target="_parent" is similar to target="_top" but will refer to the immediate parent of a frame.

target="_blank" causes the link to open in a totally new browser window, leaving the page with the refering link still open behind it.

target="_self" loads the page within the same frame as the link tag.

Targets are mainly used in links to tell a page where to open. They're mainly used when you have frames in your page or when you want to make a link open in a new browser window. If you don't know, frames are used to display more than one page in the same browser window, a left side and a right side for example. Or, a top frame and a bottom frame. You use the targets in your links to tell the browser where to open the pages you're linking to.

_blank: This tells the page to load into a whole new browser window, leaving the original browser window open.

_self: This tells the new page to open in the same frame as the page that the link came from. So, if your link was on the page in the left frame, the new page would open in your left frame.

__top: This tells the new page to open in the same browser window as the framed page, replacing the whole page. You use this when you want to break out of all your frames and replace the original framed page with a new page in the same browser window.

_parent: This tells the page to load the page over the parent frame if the current frame is nested inside other frames. (It's kinda the same thing as _top). This one is complicated and hard to explain, but it's used mainly when you have frames inside of frames.

The most commonly used targets of the 4 above is _blank and _top and _self. You don't have to have framed pages to use them. If you're using _top and _self and _parent on a page that does not have frames, all that's gonna happen is that the new page loads into the same window. Using _blank in a page without frames still makes the new page open in a new browser window.

Hope this clears things up!

Kelly
