I haven't heard too much talk about this option, (using CHMOD) for securing files and directories. I was just wondering what the basic suggestion for permission setting seems to be?

I know some modules and such require individual settings in order to operate, and everyone should read the install directions which come with the modules, but I am just looking at the basic settings.

I suggest chmod 644 anything you dont want accessed outside your site. Directories leave at 755 unless you have to upload or write to them then make them 777 but be careful with that. You should also upload a blank index.html and an .htaccess file with this in it:

deny from all

I've got a couple of questions about the index.html and the htaccess files.

1. When there is already an index.php file in the directory, my site doesn't seem to work when I upload the htaccess and index.html files

2. the htaccess file doesn't seem to work on image galleries also. It blocks all the images from showing. Should I just upload the index.html to that directory?

3. Some directories will not show images if I put the htaccess file in that directory. It only seems to effect the directories which have an index.php in the higher level directory.

Are these normal?

If you have an index.php you dont need an index.html That is for directories that do not have an index allready. What do you have in your .htaccess?

My site is getting a forbidden no matter what I set my Chmods on...I have to have them on 766 to even work in my files...and even then , when I go back, they are chmod to 644 again...just seconds later!

This all started with netscape & IE redirecting me to yoursite/index.html as opposed to your site/admin.php as I requested from my browser... i went into my ftp looked (didn't change) my Chmods which were set at 644 and still couldn't get in there....not even in the files themselves...after changing them, now I can get into the files...

I'm about to cry because I've deleted 4 sites this week and this is the most perfect one I've built so far.... icon_cry.gif

If anyone knows what may be the problem, please let me know...

Ahh...My searching methods stink. I found the answer by looking up the name of my [ Register or login to view links on this board. ] I had the base chmod confused with a chmod for another script I use.
Chmod for nuke is 755.

But, I still don't understand how my file permissions could be changed without my changing them. This has happened several times. On both of my hosts, so I must be doing something incorrectly. I'm using the WS_FTP 95...maybe that's the problem...

In closing, I've finnally realized that being in a hurry to build a site can mean that you don't so things - like searches for problems_ quite thoroughly and end up posing stupid questions like this one...Sorry guys...I WILL slow my roll and get it together next time I have a problem...it's just hard when I get so exicited about the site then face total destruction of it (it seems like it will be anyhow) icon_eek.gif
