Someone told me that .html was dropped and that all future browser updates will no longer be able to accept .html extension. Instead, it will be .htm extension. Is this true? Why is the L being dropped? I'm used to punching in the L.

I haven't heard this and I really don't see it happening. It would be like going backwards in time.

The primary difference between .htm and .html is simply that .html can't be represented in a DOS/16 bit operating system which uses the 8.3 file naming convention. So, .html files were renamed .htm when they were written on DOS/Windows 3.x systems.

Most servers now can handle 4 character file extensions. They're set up to treat .htm and .html files exactly the same, just as they can be set up to treat .jpg and .jpeg files the same.

I had a quick look around the W3C website and I didn't see anything that indicated reverting back to a 3 character extension. If something like that were going to happen, I would think it would be big news.

Oh, okay. Thanks! I was a bit worried. That would've been thousands of pages for me to edit the extension and then carefully look thru each of those source codes. Whew!
