I have a popular site, and it's hitting my one server hard causing it to crash sometimes. I need to know if there's a way to run 1 site off 2 servers so if server one is down, server 2 will kick in and keep the site going. I also need the nuke databases to talk to each other and update so it will have all the current information on server 2 if it's needed to kick in.

How popular are you talking? I don't think it is really a problem unless it is a dos or ddos attack.

Hello

Are you on a shared server? If so, that could be the problem as well.

Hello

Its probably possible, but not let have I made up the idea, or came across it. Maybe ask your hosting company to go on a dedicated server, so your site is only on one server, btw, whats your website?

Well, the thing is...my hosting company...is my friend. He is starting a company but, right now he only has 1 server.

I was thinking of getting a server for myself or getting another hosting company as a back-up.

The site is... [ Register or login to view links on this board.]

There has to be a way because...How does google do it? When the 1 server google has crashes the site goes down? There has to be a back-up server.

If I understand what you are trying to do, you want to run the exact same site but use different servers.

All you should have to do is set up some type of redirect page. I have seen some places use a map of the world. By clicking on the map, you direct your browser to the different servers. I have also seen this done with US maps.

As far as synchronizing the files on the server, there are some programs which do this automatically, but for the life of me I can't remember the names of them. I will look and see if I can find any info.

You can also run a synchronize for the mysql databases between the two sites with a cron file, but I don't know exactly how to do this.

You should be able to set the synchronization between the servers on a time basis, like each hour, 30 minutes, etc.

Hello everyone, This is his host Mitch.

I'll address each one of ya at a time.

1) Telli, I have been fighting DDOS attacks in the past, but this issue isn't being caused by that i am sure.
2) trusted-host, He's on my dedicated server, I only have 1 at the moment.
3) Gareth, That's your host, and many other hosts, but not me. He's my buddy and i'm not going to do that to him even if his site is causing problems.
4) Dauthus, How exactly will it be able to redirect if my server is down or something? I think it can be done if my server is up, some will redirect some won't. And if it goes like that, then we should'nt have a problem with it crashing like it is now. I agree with your idea of a program/cron tab to handle this, sounds like it would work.

Now, my server made it through the night, thank god. His site does get quite alot of visitors, I would think putting a limit on how many Guest he can have on there would help also, but as the smart jerk that uses the site went off slightly on me yesterday (and it did'nt make any sence because his site caused the down time) I don't know if the guest limit would be a good idea. I know this site is probably on it's own server, and that's a great idea, but my server is used by me and other customers. It's not overloaded, this is the most popular site on my server at the moment. I'm removing GoogleTap from the site today, because it's HTTPD (the webserver) cauing the high process sometimes. So i think removing it would help awhole lot.

Mitch

Here is one type of solution, and some good reading that may help you.
[ Register or login to view links on this board. ]

The only other solution I can think of would require another dedicated server for you. You could host the domain on both and set up the DNS so it goes to both of them.

hightraffic.com

dns1.host1.com
dns2.host1.com
dns3.host2.com
dns4.host2.com

At least I think that is how it goes.

Also, I should have read the other postings before I spoke. I was using the redirect page to decrease the load on an individual server. Log files can be used to gather geographic information, and then a login page can be used to redirect people from certain areas to different servers.
