Ok, so I have a question for all you designers out there... I have been asked what my hourly rate would be for design, and I have no freaking clue. The site is already designed, it just needs updates, so I would think that might drop either the hours or the rate... but I've only done one page for $$ and that was my dad's, and it wasn't an hourly rate either, so I can't figure out what to charge from that.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Depends. It can depend on a large number of factors, the hours of work you have put into it, what tools you have used, what the site contains, any out of pocket expenses for yourself.

Only you can decide on a decent rate, a rate which you think reflects what work you have put into it and what tools and resources you have used. It is basically what you think you deserve based on what you have done.

The problem is that I'm not sure what exactly I'm going to be doing and she wants me to give her a rate! I'm sooooooo lost!

You would need to ask her for what she wants then try and plan what tools you are going to be using and roughly how long it will take.

It is a mere guessing game. Give her an estimate but make sure that you place emphasis on the term estimate.

A little Math! lol

The last site you made = $??

$?? /div by how long it took = $ hourly Rate

+ experience and skill level marked one threw ten (ten being the best)

= your new hourly rate!

I am a professional web developer. We charge per page for regular static websites and by the hour for dynamic websites. We charge per hour for anything additional such as flash production, music production, print graphics, etc.

IMHO, what you charge should be based on your experience and your abilities, as well as what value you inject into the website. In other words, if you can do what few other web designers can do, charge for it!

Don't sell yourself short either. Almost anyone can learn HTML and put up a webpage, but taking the time to listen to the client's needs, carefully designing a site that will meet those needs, being able to foresee a client's future needs and being able to plan for them are services that are very valuable. Also, if you are going to be maintaining the site, make sure you figure in what your time is worth and charge for that too.

Kelly
