Ive read other threads about this problem but none of them seem to end the problem once and for all.
Random_image block is being very temperimental.
It has shown an image once or twice but the majority of the time the block is empty.

Here is the code Ive used:
case 1:
return "<img src=\"albums\Site-album\Bri01.thumb.jpg\">";

Ive also used:
case 1:
"<a href=\"www.buzzerspoolclub.co.uk\gallery\albums.php\"><img src=\"albums\Site-album\Bri01.thumb.jpg\"><\a>";

First of all is this html correct for either way of doing it?
Second if it is correct why am I having so much grief?

The path to the image seems to be ok. I was able to pull it up in my broswer.

Are you using backslashes in your code? If you are, that's most likely your problem.
